Following the temporary closure of the hotel’s main Italian outlet, Ciao Terrazza, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has transformed its alfresco Riverside Terrace to a venue for the Ciao Terrazza Pop-Up, during the summer months, every Sunday to Wednesday night.
A Feast of Antipasti
Surrounded by cool breeze and tranquil views of the mighty Chao Phraya river, the Ciao Terrazza Pop-Up offers an Italian antipasti buffet by Chef Danilo Aiassa, in which guests can feast themselves to their heart’s content. For that, diners can choose from a selection of Italian items, ranging from Italian appetizers to salads, cold cuts, and desserts.
A feast of antipasti begins with bruschetta variations which include toppings of grilled eggplant, grilled zucchini, fresh tomato and basil, stracciatella cheese and mortadella ham, and marinated roasted bell peppers with anchovies and capers. There is a fair selection of cold cuts like Coppa ham, Parma ham, Salame Felino and Coppa di testa—as well as the brilliant choices of cheese, bread, and pickles on offer.
Chef Danilo has also created a paradise for all the salad lovers with dishes like the traditional panzanella salad, consisting of chicken salad marinated with balsamic, bread croutons, fresh tomato and zucchini, followed by the penne primavera salad of fresh bell peppers, dice tomato, black olives and mozzarella cheese. The luscious classic seafood salad comes with a mix of tiger prawns, mussels, calamari with cherry tomato and green asparagus, while the beef carpaccio is also scrumptious with rocket salad and parmesan cheese.
Other highlights include the traditional vitello tonnato, made with anchovies, tuna, and capers sauce and the beetroot salad with orange and stracciatella cheese.
A Dose of Heaven
Rounding out the dessert options are the hotel’s signature traditional tiramisu, the panna cotta with three variations (raspberry sauce, apricot sauce, and caramel sauce), and the mascarpone mousse with Grand Marnier. Plus, there is an interesting selection of classic desserts, such as the sable tarte with cream and seasonal fruit, the chocolate sponge with pear, the mini baba au rhum, and the gianduja tart with hazelnut Nutella chocolate.
A definite highlight is none other than the hazelnut cake served with warm zabaglione freshly made with Marsala wine, egg yolk, and sugar. Traditionally made with deep fried sable filled with ricotta cheese, dry fruits, and nuts, the Sicilian cannoli is also the shooting star here. And to cleanse the palate, seasonal fruits and ice cream are available.
Blissful Italian Fares
To fully complete the Italian dining experience from Ciao Terrazza, there are also several Italian dishes from the a la carte menu, which can be ordered as separate items, to choose from.
The Pizza Al Gorgonzola, Noci E Zucca, made with Gorgonzola cheese, walnut and pumpkin cream and the Focaccia Al Tartufo E Mascarpone, an Italian staple filled with mascarpone and truffle pay homage to the regional cooking of Italy in terms of both taste and presentation.
Getting on to the pasta, the Ravioli Ripieni Di Ricotta E Spinaci Al Pomodoro E Basilico is made, from a scratch, with homemade ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach served with tomato sauce and basil. This is followed by the tempting Bucatini All’ Amatriciana E Stracciatella, comprised of bucatini pasta cooked to perfection with guanciale ham, stracciatella cheese, and caciocavallo cheese. Meanwhile, the Tagliolini Fatti A Mano Alla Cacio E Pepe, prepared at the table in a wheel of pecorino cheese, is simply delicious with the taste of cheese and pepper.
Apart from the regular menu items, there is also a special menu which changes on a monthly basis, and this month, the menu revolves around seafood. The appetizing Linguine Con Gamberi Rossi Di Mazzaro Del Vallo E Pomodorini arrives with Sicilian red prawns atop the linguine pasta with cherry tomatoes and white wine sauce. Next comes the Tagliolini Con Scampetti, Zucchine E Burrata, the homemade tagliolini cooked with burrata cheese, zucchini, and langoustine. Last but not least, the Trancio Di Pesce Spada Alla Siciliana is guaranteed to please the Italian palates with sword fish prepared in Sicilian style with caponata, broccoli, cauliflower, capers and taggiasche olives.
The Italian antipasti buffet, priced at THB 850++ runs from 19:00 – 22:30 every Sunday to Wednesday. It also comes with an additional free-flow Prosecco package at THB 990++. Moreover, from Thursday to Saturday night, guests can visit the Riverside Terrace for its usual sumptuous barbeque buffet at THB 2,350++.
The Ciao Terrazza Pop-up at the Riverside Terrace, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok might not be as grand as the actual Ciao Terrazza. But when it comes to taste, Chef Danilo Aiassa is truly a perfectionist.
